Mediasite
Mediasite is a videocasting technology that captures audio, video, and a computer signal, such as a PowerPoint presentation, simultaneously and then streams the content live or on demand to students. All data is streamed, either live or on-demand, which means that users can't download and 'walk away' with copyrighted content.
Mediasite presentations are browser based, so there aren't any large files to work with. All of the data is stored on a separate streaming server which can be accessed by a simple URL. Instructors can place the URL for a specific presentation in RamCT for easy student access.
To assist classroom management, Mediasite provides reporting features that can track who is watching what and for how long.
When to use Mediasite:
- Mediasite works well for courses that have a displaced audience, such as off-campus and distance students.
- Mediasite can also be used as a reinforcement tool, allowing students to review lectures and increase retention.
- To maximize the effectiveness of the technology, using PowerPoint or a doc-cam in conjunction w/ the lecture is recommended.
When NOT to use Mediasite:
- If you're thinking of replacing your on-campus lecture solely with video — this is not the ideal learning environment for students.
- When using white/blackboard as primary medium to present content — the Mediasite camera is not the best tool for capturing small text on the board.
