Certificate in College Teaching
The Certificate in College
Teaching Program is flexible, and you can tailor it to your personal and
disciplinary interests. This certificate program requires a commitment of
approximately 40 hours, and you have the opportunity to develop a Teaching ePortfolio,
which will be reviewed by the Graduate Teaching Certificates Review Board.
The basic requirements are listed below. Please note that these requirements are flexible: you can design your own program
in consultation with Graduate Teaching Certificates Review Board members.
General Requirements
- Complete one course in
post-secondary teaching theory and practice. A number of departments at CSU offer courses in
post-secondary teaching. Among those courses are GRAD792, E502 Language, Literacy and Learning, E503 Investigating Classroom Literacies, E526 Foreign/Second Language, E603 Computers in Writing, E633 Seminar in Writing Across the Curriculum, E607 or E680 gtPathways, EDUC 713 Teaching, Learning and Professional Growth, EDUC 628 Models of Teaching, EDUC 619 Curriculum Development, EDUC 629 Classroom and Communication, and the 684 and 784 Supervised College Teaching courses offered in many departments.
You may also petition for a special course by contacting a Certificate in
College Teaching Advisory Board member.
- Attend at least six
pedagogical workshops and write Workshop Responses (using the
workshop response form) for each.
Faculty and staff from across the university offer dozens of pedagogical
workshops each semester. You can find a list of those workshops on the
TILT Web site. Download the Workshop/Seminar Review Form.
- Participate in at least
20 hours of teaching, tutoring, or a teaching internship. If you are a GTA, your experience in the
classroom will contribute to your teaching expertise. If you are not a
GTA, you can enroll in a teaching internship course, or you can apply to
work as a tutor in one of CSU student services programs, such as the CSU
Writing Center or The Academic Advancement Center. Download the Experiential Learning Form.
