Junior Electrical Engineering major, Melissa Wirtz is originally from Corrales, New Mexico.
Melissa first began conducting research in high school when she was selected as a STEM Teacher and Researcher High School (STAR) Fellow at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, she helped create new chemical compounds under the direction of Dr. Richard Kemp.
Impressed by her aptitude for research, she has been asked to return to his lab every summer since. Last summer, she participated in the International Institute of Nanotechnology Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University and conducted research in nanotechnology. Currently a sophomore at CSU, Emily majoring in Biochemistry and Anthropology and minoring in Spanish. Prior to her arrival at CSU, Emily was active in research and outreach.
She spent nearly two years of volunteering at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and completed a summer research internship on a self-devised project concerning pine beetles and changing climate in Rocky Mountain forests with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program in 2011.
