This session is for anyone who would like to develop strategies for consistent grading across multiple graders. We will present reasons for using calibration sessions, and we will describe how we have used them to calibrate grading with multiple graders by using holistic grading approaches. Calibration can be conducted in fairly short sessions, and can create relatively high levels of consistency. Participants in this workshop will do an actual calibration session in order to experience how it works.

In this workshop we will describe how writing-to-learn and writing-to-communicate are different instructional goals. We will share how these can be modified for smaller, lab-sized courses as well as for larger (~100+ students) lecture sections. We will share our experiences with providing feedback to students in an efficient and timely manner using peer feedback, instructor feedback, and assignments built around self-evaluation strategies. After completing this session participants will be able to: 1. define scientific literacy and writing to learn 2. develop a writing to learn activity for their course 3. implement a writing to learn activity including scoring the submitted assignments in their own course.
