Service-Learning Assessment and Evaluation

TILT provides both qualitative and quantitative instruments for assessing the effectiveness of service-learning programming in the areas of enhanced academic learning, critical thinking development, civic learning, instructional effectiveness, outreach, and student retention.

Assessment instruments include self-report surveys and questionnaires as well as qualitative rubrics. These rubrics—designed to facilitate and measure both academic enhancement and civic learning outcomes—can be used both as in-class resources to support students’ writing and critical thinking and as evaluative tools that allow instructors, departments, programs, and institutions to identify, measure, and demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and competencies they want students to have as a result of their service-learning experiences.
