What is Academic Coaching?

TILT’s Peer Academic Coaching is a free support service designed to help students develop the skills and strategies needed for academic success. Unlike our tutoring services, which focus on specific course content, academic coaches work with CSU students from any major and any class to address broader academic challenges. Our coaches provide personalized guidance on effective study techniques, time management, organization skills, goal setting, and navigating university resources.

Academic coaching fills a crucial gap in student support by offering holistic assistance that extends beyond classroom material. Many students struggle not with understanding content, but with developing productive academic habits and approaches to learning. Our peer coaches can help you create actionable plans, whether you’re looking to improve your study efficiency, manage your workload better, or tackle exams. Our coaches are ready to support your academic journey.

What Can an Academic Coach Help With?

TILT’s peer academic coaches provide support across a wide range of academic skills and challenges that are essential for success at CSU. Rather than focusing on course-specific content, coaches help students develop effective learning strategies and habits that apply to students in every major.

  • Personalized Study strategies – Learn techniques tailored toward your specific courses and learning style
  • Note-taking strategies – Discover systems to capture and organize information efficiently
  • Time management & planning – Create a realistic schedule to prioritize tasks and balance your life in and out of the classroom
  • Test preparation – develop exam preparation plans, in-text strategies, and help reduce test anxiety
  • Stress management – Build resilience and maintain wellness during challenging academic periods
  • Overcoming procrastination – Implement practical strategies to overcome delays

Coaches are also trained to help get students connected to student and campus resources when they are not able to help, including things like:

Meet Your Academic Coaches

Alicia Gilmore

Alicia Gilmore

Alicia is a junior from Maui, Hawaii studying Agricultural Education (Teacher Development) with a minor in Creative Writing. She loves all things cute including her cats, Sanrio, and stationery. In the future, she hopes to have her own home garden.

Her favorite thing to do as a coach is helping students find solutions that cater to them as an individual. One study habit she swears by is creating an area in your room that is dedicated to studying and nothing else. After a while, you will automatically think about studying whenever you enter that space.

Julissa Espinoza Saenz

Julissa Espinoza Saenz

Julissa (she/her) is a Sophomore from Silverthorne, Colorado studying Nutrition and Food Science with a concentration in Dietetics! As a coach, Julissa’s favorite thing is getting to know students better and finding out how she can help others succeed in school and life!

Her best study tip is to actively engage with the material by teaching it to yourself, consistently reviewing it, and practicing active recall.

UNO Scott Scholar Emika Buschow has their photo taken on Monday, June 9, 2025, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

Emika Buschow

Emika is a junior studying chemical & biological engineering and biomedical engineering. Her favorite part of coaching is getting to know her students better and watching them grow. Her best study tip is finding a study group with people who can help you understand the material, as well as people you can teach the content to. This allows you and your study group to teach each other and solidify the information.

In her free time, Emika loves spending time with her friends, going to games, and scrapbooking.

Kevin Lopez Perez

Kevin Lopez Perez

Born and raised in Breckenridge, Colorado studying Nutrition & Food Science. I love to help others in figuring out what type of help works best for them. A quick study tip is to always organize your day. That means having a calendar that has times for everything you need to do that day, including times when you eat and do other activities outside of school.
