2024 Community Engaged Learning Award Recipients
Exceptional Achievement in Service Learning Student Award
This award is presented to a student or student group for their remarkable social or environmental contributions achieved through an academic service-learning course, a supervised internship or professional project, or community-engaged research.
Student Teaching Staff of the Middle School Outreach Ensembles and Trying-On-Teaching Programs in the School of Music, Theater and Dance
The 26 undergraduate and graduate students in the Middle School Outreach Ensembles and Trying on Teaching Programs serve hundreds of middle school student musicians in over 40 Northern Colorado schools. These CSU music education students organize, design, and implement a three-month long community music program that is free and accessible to all middle and high school students in Northern Colorado. In 2024 they integrated the theme “Dispositions of Democracy” into weekly music learning activities, put on a final showcase for over 600 attendees, and organized a music carnival that brought new students to campus to experience creative music making in a supportive space. They are recognized for their contributions to community outreach programs that exemplify and embody Community Engaged Learning and Engaged Scholarship.
Exceptional Achievement in Service-Learning Community Partner Awards
Presented to a CSU community partner for their commitment to building university-community partnerships that meet community-articulated needs and challenges while supporting the holistic education of the next generation of professionals, leaders, and citizens.
Stephen Walker
Job Title: Project Manager, FCI Constructors INC
Community Partner with the CM Cares program in Construction Management
The CM Cares program connects students, faculty, and staff, with industry partners to assist with construction-related projects for people with special needs or local community service agencies needing assistance that other sources cannot provide. Steve has been an integral part of the CM Cares service-learning program for six years, donating time and expertise and mentoring student groups as they complete their projects. He is an incredible resource for getting design, material, and labor donated through his connections in the construction industry and through the philanthropy of FCI constructors. Steve is one of the most vital partners the program has ever had and is one of the reasons why the program is able to help community members and groups in this way.
Marcy Yoder
Job Title: Neighborhood Services Manager, City of Fort Collins
Community Partner with Community Engagement and the Arts course in CSU’s Arts Management Program
Marcy played an essential role in the success of the community-created mural entitled “Intersection”, on the CSU Housing and Dining Services Building on W. Plum St in Fort Collins. The mural, created with noted community artist, Armand Silva, and over 100 community participants, went up in the summer of 2023. Marcy engaged with City of Fort Collins team-members to identify possible locations for the mural project. She was instrumental in management of a neighborhood ‘Charrette’ and coordinated outreach to neighborhoods, inviting residents to participate in various stages of the project, including painting and a neighborhood celebration. The partnership the Marcy facilitates with the City of Fort Collins continues to bring great benefit and enrichment to CSU students and the community at large.
