Format and Submission Guidelines

Research Posters

Poster Dimensions

Create a a 3′ x 4′ or 4′ x 3 visual presentation comprising the components of your research or design project—the background, the motivation, the methods, the results, a discussion and any conclusions or summary you might have.

If your poster is larger than 3′ x 4′ or 4′ x 3′, you will have trouble displaying it in the space provided.

How To Make a Research Poster

Abstract Format

There are no hard requirements for your abstract, however, a disciplinary-appropriate format and length is expected; a concise, 200-word maximum summary covering all of the key points, is recommended.

You may include figures and/or pictures as appropriate and are strongly encouraged to have your abstract reviewed by a your advisor-mentor.

Service-Learning Posters

Include the following with your entry:

  • Name of the student or student group involved
  • Course title and number, program or student club name, or project initiative title
  • Faculty instructor, staff mentor, or project advisor name
  • Agencies or community groups collaborated with
  • The purpose of the collaboration
  • Clear display of collaboration (on or off-campus), outcomes, reflection, and impacts of the work, including community benefits if applicable

Oral Presentations

Prepare In The Following Manner:

  • Individual student presentations must not exceed ten minutes and group presentations must not exceed 20 minutes, excluding questions.
  • Students must include a visual outline of their oral presentations, using either a PowerPoint presentation or a single-page digital outline to project on the screen. A laptop will be available and students must bring their presentation outlines on a flash drive. If a student would like to include a handout, it must reflect the same information as the PowerPoint or digital outline.

Visual Art Presentations

Accepted Works

  • Including, but not limited to, paintings, drawings, prints, photography, posters, and textiles. Works must not exceed 72″ x 72″, with a depth not to exceed 4″.

Guidelines

  • Undergraduates in any major are welcome to submit.
  • May submit up to two (2) works per person.
  • All submissions must be the entrant’s own original work.
  • All entrants must prepare an Artist’s Talk to be delivered at CURC on April 15. Please see below for further presentation guidelines.
  • Winning works will be displayed in Johnson Commons for the 2019-2020 Academic Year.

Guidelines for Artist's Talk

  • Talk should be 3-5 minutes in length and should include some or all of the following:

    • Brief background and explanatory information about your work and what it represents.
    • Where your ideas originated and how you incorporated them into your work.
    • The significance of your work (perhaps to the field or your community).
    • What being an artist means to you.

Research Posters

Writing Competition

  • Creative Writing: including, but not limited to fiction, non-fiction, poetry and multi-genre works.

    Non-fiction: including, but not limited to, essays, academic writing, journalism and multi-genre works.

Guidelines

  • Undergraduates in any major are welcome to submit.
  • May submit up to one (1) work per category.
  • All submissions must be the entrant’s own original work and must be currently unpublished.
  • All submissions must be written in English. Translations into English of work written in other languages will be accepted, provided that the original source is the entrant’s own work.
  • All submissions are final. No corrections or replacements will be allowed.
  • Preference will be given to shorter documents.
  • All submissions will be judged anonymously by a panel of CSU faculty and staff. Please ensure that any identifying information is removed from your work before submitting. Names will be reattributed to works only after winners have been decided.
  • Highest Honor recipient will be published in the Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Excellence (author will retain copyright).
