Josh Conlin OURA Ambassador Headshot

College/Major: College of Natural Sciences/Biological Sciences – Botany concentration; Chemistry and Horticulture minors

Biography: I am a third-year student at CSU with a passion for science and a love for learning! My interest in the natural world came at an early age, where I would watch nature documentaries for fun in my spare time. David Attenborough’s soothing voice telling me that the baby polar bears were going to die because of climate change pointed me in the direction of sustainability, guiding me to where I am today. I enjoy playing the piano, watching artsy movies, and discovering new recipes to cook at home. When I’m not in the lab, I can be found listening to live music, rock climbing, or taking care of my houseplants.

Research Experience: I currently work in the Khakhar Lab in the Biology Department, where I design functional RNA tools to increase or decrease gene expression in plants, modify viruses into vectors that can be used as herbicides, and grow transgenic plants in optimal ways to ensure healthy and pathogen-free material. I help carry out a lot of my mentor’s research, but I also have my own independent project that I’m working on. Data analysis, sample collection, and DNA synthesis/isolation are all important aspects of what I do.

Campus involvement: OURA Ambassador, Undergraduate Researcher, Algae club, Horticulture club

Post-graduation plans: I plan on attending graduate school, eventually working my way to a PhD.

Favorite part of research: Learning! Every day is a chance to absorb some sort of new information, whether through experimentation or via the postgrads’ immense knowledge. The more I learn, the easier it is to ask questions that further my understanding of the natural world. The field of plant synthetic biology is still relatively unmapped, and every question asked brings us closer to a healthier and more sustainable planet.

Advice for students interested in getting involved in research: Step out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to ask questions!
