Nyla Bickham
College/Major: College of Natural Sciences
Biography: I am a Junior in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. I’m passionate about live music, foraging mushrooms, and playing guitar. I also love crocheting, pottery, scrapbooking, propagating plants, and collecting CDs and vinyl records.
Research Experience: Currently, I work in the Adolescent Wellness Lab, where I study the effects of medical interventions on teens with T2B at risk of depression. Previously, I conducted laboratory experiments in the OURA Lab and developed an independent research project on the insulin-regulation potential of Reishi and Turkey tail mushrooms. I also contributed to the ABCD Study (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development), investigating the effects of substances on adolescents.
Campus involvement: Outside of academics, I’m involved in the Mycology Club, serve as an OURA Ambassador, and am a VPR MURALS Scholar, all while working as a pharmacy technician and a resident assistant at Academic Village.
Post-graduation plans: My post-graduation plans include studying abroad in Germany and attending medical school while continuing to explore the intersections of medicine and discovery.
Favorite part of research: What excites me most about research is the ability to combine my passion for science and natural remedies to uncover new medicinal potentials. I enjoy the hands-on experience and the thrill of discovery that research provides.
Advice for students interested in getting involved in research: For students interested in research, my biggest advice is to embrace opportunities outside of your comfort zone. Some of the best experiences come from saying “yes” to new challenges, allowing you to grow, gain skills, and uncover new passions.
