Introduction to Writing AI Prompts

As AI tools become increasingly integrated into education and research, understanding how to craft effective prompts is key to harnessing their potential. In this interactive workshop, participants explored the fundamentals of generative AI and gained hands-on experience in writing and refining AI prompts. Through small-group activities, attendees practiced techniques such as assigning roles, specifying output styles, and using few-shot prompting—an approach that primes AI with examples to improve responses. After a brief overview of key AI concepts and terminology, participants experimented with generating texts, from emails to creative resources like recipes.

Workshop Goals

  • Develop a foundational understanding of prompt writing for generative AI

  • Practice techniques to improve AI-generated outputs, including role assignment, output style, and few-shotting

  • Experiment with AI tools to create and refine different types of text-based content

  • Gain hands-on experience working with AI in small groups

Key Topics Covered

  • Basics of generative AI and prompt engineering

  • Techniques for refining AI-generated responses

  • Hands-on exercises in crafting prompts for different purposes

  • Practical applications of AI in writing and content creation

This session was designed as an introductory exploration of AI tools and did not cover ethical, professional, or educational considerations for AI use.

For those who couldn’t attend, we’ve made the workshop recording and presentation slides available below.
