teaching effectiveness framework diagramTransitioning to a consistent, evidence-based framework supported by the CSU Faculty Manual and recommended by the Office of the Provost is a meaningful step toward fostering a culture of teaching excellence in your department. While making this change does require initial effort, the long-term benefits for department leadership, faculty, and students make it a worthwhile investment.

  • Integrate the TEF into your department’s annual evaluation process.  If you have not yet integrated the TEF, discuss TEF integration with your departmental promotion and tenure committee. TILT’s recommended 4-step process for developing and evaluating teaching offers a starting point for this discussion.
  • With your P & T committee, determine leveled criteria for annual review of teaching. You can use this Annual Evaluation Criteria document from TILT as a starting point.
  • Encourage faculty to attend professional development that aligns with teaching goals. TILT offers a variety of programs aligned with TEF domains, including workshops, Communities of Practice, Best Practices in Teaching courses, Teaching Squares, and the Master Teacher Initiative.
  • Promote the Teaching Effectiveness Initiative (TEI) program as a culminating opportunity to document their teaching development. Consider implementing departmental recognition programs to celebrate teaching achievements and foster a culture that values teaching excellence.
