Improving Student Success with Transparent Assignment Design: TILTing at TILT

A hands-on workshop with Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes, national expert on transparent teaching, founder of TILT Higher Ed

Join us for an interactive, research-informed workshop led by Dr. Mary-Ann Winkelmes, founder of TILT Higher Ed and a national expert on transparent teaching. Research shows that transparent assignment design significantly improves student learning, persistence, confidence, and sense of belonging—especially for historically underserved students.

This workshop is designed for instructors and is open to others across campus who work with student-facing learning materials. Participants will actively apply the TILT (Transparency in Learning and Teaching) Framework to revise an assignment they currently use, making expectations clearer, purposes more explicit, and criteria more accessible for students. Even small changes—such as revising one or two assignments—can have a meaningful impact on student success and teaching satisfaction.

Participants will:

  • Learn about the research behind transparent teaching and why it works
  • Practice applying the TILT Framework using sample assignments
  • Explore strategies for making assignments and learning materials more transparent and equitable
  • Revise one of their own assignment prompts during the session

This workshop is highly interactive. Participants are encouraged to bring an assignment they would like to revise.

Date: Monday, January 26
Time: 10:00 AM–12:00 PM MT
Format: Zoom

Register Via Bridge

Registrants will be asked to complete a brief, two-question pre-workshop survey. Dr. Winkelmes will share anonymous responses during the session to tailor the discussion to participants’ needs.
